dont-go-it-alone

If you sat down on January 1st with a notebook and pen and scripted out your goals for 2015, I’m talking to you. Even if you’re a Type A, self-motivated individual, I’m still talking to you.

If you made a New Year’s Resolution to join a gym, to lose weight, or to change your diet, but you haven’t shared this goal with anyone who is going to do this with you, I’m talking to you.

If you’ve gone to the gym this year alone, hopped on a treadmill or elliptical with your earphones in, I’m talking to you.

If you’ve gone to the grocery and wandered around the produce section, buying bags of lettuce and whole wheat bread, I’m talking to you.

If you’re looking to better your life in 2015, I’m talking to you.

Yes, YOU.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past few years, it’s that success is rarely achieved alone. Think about the Golden Globes or Grammys, or even the Presidential election. Have you ever seen a winner stand up to receive an award/position and say, “I’d like to thank myself. Myself is completely awesome and it’s because I’m so awesome that I achieved this goal. I’m so proud of myself, and I plan to continue to rock for the rest of eternity. Thanks for being along for the ride!”

Nope.

Usually, we have to suffer through interrupted-with-music thank you speeches, thanking all of the people along the winner’s way who helped them reach their goals. Their producers, directors, fellow actors, fans, family, friends, campaign manager, you name it.

Turns out, success isn’t achieved alone.

So why, then, when it comes to our health and fitness, do we decide it’s a good idea to set a goal, make a plan, and go after it 100% on our own?

Easy answer: Because of our insecurities. Because it’s uncomfortable to reach out and ask for help, or to buddy up for accountability. Because our ego can’t believe that our body has gotten into the shape it’s in, and rather than let the ego go, we hang on to it tightly. But here’s the thing…

The ego is what holds you back.

It’s the devil on your shoulder.

The excuses that pop into your head when the alarm goes off at 5:15a.m.

I’m writing this post because I want to save you time, and I want to proactively rescue your New Year’s Resolution. But in order to do that, you’re going to have to close out your screen on this post after reading and DO SOMETHING about it. You’re going to need to find an accountability partner, or a Coach, who can keep you to your goals. If you’re looking to lose weight, talk to an expert. Someone who can help you find an effective way to lose the weight that works for YOU. Accept the fact that you’re a lawyer who specializes in law, or a teacher who specializes in education, or a mother who specializes in her children, but you are NOT a health and fitness expert.

You deserve to be healthy.

You deserve to feel amazing.

You deserve to have someone else invested in your success.

You deserve to not go this alone.
