Welcome to summer! Farmers Markets are in full swing everywhere, which means it’s time YOU take advantage, and we don’t mean take advantage of the donut stand. Farmers Markets offer some of the sweetest fruits, robust vegetable selections, and delicious honey and oils you can find. So where do you begin? We’ve got you covered.
Start the 21 Day Fix Today!
Truly, this time of year is the BEST time of year to start and complete the 21 Day Fix (and, as you’ll find soon enough, maintaining it as a lifestyle is easy peasy). But why not begin when you have access to delicious foods via your local Farmer’s Market?
Let’s start with the basics. Here are our top tips for shopping your local farmer’s market:
- While not every Farmer’s Market offers the same variety of options when it comes to produce, the selection you do have is likely what’s grown best in your area. Take advantage! Whether it’s blueberries in Michigan or honey in Indiana, consume local foods. Your taste buds will thank you.
- Bring your own reusable grocery bags. Makes shopping and perusing easy!
- Take our grocery list with you. Sometimes, all of the options can overwhelm you and you can get lost in the sampling. Go prepared!
- Research tips for finding the juiciest/most quality goods. For example, did you know that the canteloupe that smells the strongest is usually the sweetest? You’re welcome.
- Stay away from the vendors trying to turn the Farmer’s Market into the State Fair. Corn dogs and funnel cakes? No thanks. Stick to nature’s bounty!
- When you get home with your produce in tow, organize in your refrigerator accordingly, and be sure to pre-dice and slice. Doing so will make these foods more accessible and appealing. Sometimes we opt to go for the most convenient option. To eat healthy, we need to first MAKE doing so convenient for us.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Get to know the farmers and their market workers, and ask for advice. “What’s better, the strawberries or blueberries this week?” Trust us. They know.
- Don’t forget to plan your meals ahead for the week! Whether you plan meals and THEN shop or shop and then plan meals, don’t skip the step of making a plan.
The bottom line is that nature has its way of producing the foods we need to feel good. Making it an active weekly event to attend your local farmer’s market is a great way to set you up for a successful week of clean eating. And while it can seem overwhelming, especially if you’re not familiar with some of the vegetables on display at these events, overcome your fear! Education is the best way to make a change… self education at that.
